Ski
Touring in the Tatras, Poland
The
Tatras range is located in the Northern Carpates, at the border of Poland
and Slovakia. The peaks do not surpass 2600meters in altitude
but the steepness and the latitude of the range make the conditions
more difficult than one would imagine.
The Poles do very little ski touring which leaves the mountain range
‘untouched’.
The Polish and Slovakian Tatras are part of a natural park that is home
to brown bears, wolves and elk …
Zakopane,
the Polish Chamonix, situated at only 400meters in altitude, is covered
in snow for most of the winter.
Easily accessible by bus from Krakow, this little town is the point
of departure for our traverse.
The huts hidden in snow covered meadows are filled of character: built
with wood or stone,
they have beer on tap, and some even have showers, both of which are
a nice way to end the day !
