The Briançonnais region: It is where the Southern Alps begin, at the foot of the Ecrins in the Oisans range. Nature here reminds us of the Provence region. It displays a colourful alpine landscape with shades of earthy browns, greys and whites, and desolate-looking peaks, often covered in glittering icecaps.
The Queyras region: Nestled at the foot of Mount Viso it is remote, yet famous for its Regional wildlife sanctuary, picturesque villages and a rich and welcoming mountain heritage.

Transfers, luggage and picnics are provided by our mountain leaders. You only carry what you need for the day, allowing you to make the most of your hike.

Day 1 : Chamonix - Col du Montgenèvre Le Briançonnais
We leave Chamonix early in the morning: we meet the group and leader in front of Maison de la Montagne at 6 am, to take the direction of Italy, via the Mont Blanc tunnel. The roads brings us back to France a while alter, at Montgenèvre (1850m/6 100ft) where our hiking adventure begins. From the top of the Chalmettes gondola, we hike towards a geologically peculiar summit, Mont Chenaillet (2650m/8 745ft). It is the ideal belvedere to admire the valleys of the Briançonnais region. Then we follow a beautiful trail down to the Cervières alpine bowl, and reach our mountain inn at the hamlet of Les Fonds.

Day 2 : Les Fonds de Cervières - Abriès
We head out to Malrif pass (2866m/9 457ft) in order to step into the Queyras regional wildlife sanctuary. From the pass, Le Grand Glaiza (3293m/10 867ft), the 4th highest summit in the reserve, remains a hiking possibility. Then we follow a shoulder from the pass until we reach the grassy hillside at the base of our imposing goal. From the summit we can admire the Ecrins range, Aiguilles d’Arves, Mont Viso and Bric Froid. The view is absolutely spectacular! Then we hike down towards the village of Aiguilles, via the Malrif lakes and the Lombard sheep farm. We spend the night at the mountain inn of La Monta.
Elevation gain : 865 to 1 260m - Drop : 850 to 1 310m
Day 3 : L’Echalp - St Véran Le Queyras
After a short transfer with our minivan, we start hiking on the GR58 (the Great Hiking Trail around the Queyras range). We hike up the beautiful Bouchouse alpine meadows and bowl, where 3 lakes invite us to take a break and admire the surrounding landscapes such as the Taillante ridge and Sugar Loaf, not so hard to reach for some of us with more energy to waste! Mount Viso has never looked so close. After a short descent, the trail leads to Agnel hut. From there we transfer by minivan to the famous village of St Véran ( 2042m/6740) where we stay for the night.
Elevation gain : 1 100 to 1 500m - Drop : 1 050m
Day 4 : Chapelle du Clausis - Fouillouse La Haute Ubaye
We leave the charming village of St Véran with the minibus shuttling to the Clausis chapel. Once in the Alpine valley of La Blanche, just below Tête de Toillies, we head out towards La Noire mountain pass (2955m/ 9 751ft) to leave the Queyras range and enter the region of Haute Ubaye. The surrounding mountains and valleys are fairly unknown to hikers, yet their attraction is so real! We hike down the long Longet valley until we reach the hamlet of Maljasset. We ride our minivan to the beautiful hamlet of Fouillouse.

Day 5 : Fouillouse - St Ours
It is such an incredibly beautiful landscape! Mount Chambeyron is truly imposing, and yet smells of the Provence region fill the air around us! Today’s hike takes us to the mountain pass of Vallonnet (2550m/8 415ft) leading further to the South! Then we continue to the mountain pass of Mallemort (2458m/8 112ft) and to La Batterie de Viraysse. Ruins and fortresses from the Maginot line and WWII days are not rare, proving the military strategic importance of the area, located between the regions of Piémont, Savoie and Provence. We spend the night at St Ours.

Day 6 : Vallon du Lauzanier
After a short transfer to Col de Larche (1950m/6’435ft), we start hiking up the beautiful alpine valley of Orronaye. Once at the base of Moise head, we hike over our last mountain pass, Roburent (2502m/8 256ft). This high alpine bowl is a gem! Far in the arising, we can already get a glimpse of the Southern Alps and Mercantour range, where another adventure begins… Transfer back to Chamonix (5h30).

The guide may have to adapt the route to weather conditions and/or to group physical and/or technical ability.

At 6.30 am from the Compagnie des Guides in Chamonix on Day 1. You are welcome to come and meet your guide the evening before at our office at 6 pm.
3/5 - The Southern Alps “Light Backpack” hiking trip is a moderate trek. A minimum of 700m (2350ft) vertical gain and about 5 to 7 hours of hiking daily. Hiking on generally well-maintained mountain trails, sometimes including easy out-of-trail sections. For active people who don’t mind training to prepare for the hike. A great multiday hike for people with trekking experience.
Minimum 6 and maximum 12 people per guide.
No booking accepted in our scheduled groups for people under the age of 18 without a legal guardian.
Nights in basic hotel or mountain hut, 4 nights in dormitory and 1 night in double or quadruple shared bed room.
Participants must have an insurance with repatriation cover. Cancellation insurance is highly recommended.
You can take out insurance offering both of these types of cover when you sign up.
Participants must also take valid ID with them.
- Ankle supporting boots with notched technical rubber sole (i.e. VIBRAM).
- We strongly recommend wearing new boots to break them in before the hike.
- To avoid blisters, try rubbing baby talc on dry feet before using boots (sprinkling talc inside boot works too.
- Minimum size recommended 30 L (bigger is better than too small).
- Take out lunch should still fit after packing for the day.
- Bad weather precaution: pack covers are great to protect pack from rain or snow. We also recommend packing your belongings in a large and solid plastic bag (i.e. garbage bag) for a better protection in case of heavy rainfall.
A solid travel bag (suitcase, framed duffle bag), weighing 33 lbs (15 kg) at the most.
Avoid using cotton underwear. Compared to technical synthetic material, it is heavier and it dries slowly. Wool is also getting popular amongst sportswear brands. Synthetic and wool are warmer; they dry fast, and allow you to pack light (you can easily wash a piece of underwear in the sink as you arrive at the mountain inn/hut. It will be dry before you finish your first beer!).

- 1 polar + 1 light down jacket (or a second fleece)
- 1 pair of shorts + 1 pair of hiking pants
- 1 pair of synthetic hiking socks
- 1 Gore-tex jacket
- Sun hat or ball cap, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip protection
- 1 warm hat, a pair of gloves
- 1 water bottle (1.5 quart to 2 quarts minimum) + 1 pocket knife + 1 "spork"
- 1 pair of telescopic poles
FOR THE ENTIRE HIKE
- Sets of change : (prefer synthetic) - Light clothes for the evening
- 1 pair of comfortable shoes for the evening
- one-person sheet (sleeping bag liner)

- Pocket light of head-lamp
- Personal first aid kit **
- ID card or valid passport + small change/bills for personal expenses
- A small amount of laundry detergent
- Optional: camera, binoculars, umbrella etc …
** Elastoplast (stretchable strapping tape), band-aids, second skin, medicine for common aches and pains (diarrhea, headaches, sore throat …). Do not forget to bring your personal prescription treatment if you have one. Mountain leaders also carry a complete first aid kit. Remember that packing light is essential.
*** Some destinations include a night in a dormitory: bring a small towel, a one-person sleep-sheet (silk is comfortable and remains the lightest), and ear-plugs ...
