Body

The Argentière Basin is a site unique in the world. Rapidly reached from the Grands Montets ski area, it is bordered by a collection of peaks that create a striking atmosphere. Its north faces, from the Verte to the Dolent, constitute a line of vertiginous ice-covered walls over a thousand metres high. On its south-facing aspect, the Chardonnet and Aiguille d’Argentière preside over slender rocky arêtes. The Argentière hut is an ideal base camp to make the most of the atmosphere of these surroundings and their enormous potential.

Programme includes: immersion in the heart of the high-mountain environment and ski touring in scenery unique in the world.

Itinerary

Info : Following the fire that hit the cable car of les Grands Montets, the itinerary will be modify; with an extra vertical ascent of 300 m. Starting from Bochard lift (2766m), we join Lognan glacier (2700m). Skin up to Les Grands Montets glacier (3050m) through the Rachasses pass. Here, we join the normal route.

Day 1 : We begin the day with the handsome descent of the Rognons glacier from the top of the Grands Montets cable car (3300m). Having arrived at the Argentière glacier (2550m), we put on our skins and head for the Argentière hut (2771m), where we have a break and lighten our packs. We now head towards the Améthystes glacier where we revise some basic ski touring (kick turns) and mountain safety (avalanche rescue) techniques. Descent and night in the Argentière hut where the dining room offers impressive panoramic views of the north face of the Droites.
Vertical ascent: 500m / Vertical descent: 1000m

Day 2 : We leave for the Col d’Argentière (3552m). Throughout the ascent there are spectacular views over the legendary north faces of the Argentière glacier: the Triolet, Courtes, Droites and Aiguille Verte. Descent via same route and second night in hut.
Vertical ascent: 780m / Vertical descent: 780m

Day 3 : Col du Passon (3028m). Our day starts with a short descent to the Passon moraine (2380m). We cross the moraine on foot and we may require crampons. The climb continues on skis. The slopes here are wide up until the col, which we reach using crampons and roped together via a couloir about a hundred metres high. The views from the col, over not only the Argentière basin but also the Le Tour basin, are simply breath-taking. The ski down to the village of Le Tour via the Le Tour glacier is a Chamonix valley must! 1600m of great skiing!
Vertical ascent: 650m / Vertical descent: 1850m
