Body

Combining trail running and mountaineering, this Gran Paradiso express allows you to reach the summit in a day. The route takes you from gentle paths to the top ridge and the statue of the Virgin Mary. With more than 2000 vertical metres, the Gran Paradiso in a day is a real challenge and a good training exercise for the Mont Blanc summit in a day.

The Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix guarantees you the security standards adapted to this ascent that partially takes place in the mountains. A previous experience in mountaineering is required (use of crampons and ice axe). A day beforehand can be requested to attain the basic mountaineering skills required for the ascent.

Thanks to our partnership with Grivel, light mountaineering gear is provided (ice axe, crampons, harness, helmet).  
 

Itinerary

In Option : Practice hiking with crampons: Aiguille du Midi (3842m) or Pointe Helbronner (3462m).
A day to get familiar with basic mountaineering techniques: walking on a glacier while roped-up, using crampons and ice-axe, learning elementary mountaineering knots, etc. During this first day, we will take some time to learn and master basic mountaineering techniques and test our physical skills in order to increase our chances of success and reach the summit of Grand Paradis in one day.
 
Ascending Gran Paradiso
We leave Chamonix very early in the morning. We stop at Victor Emanuel hut on the way up and on the way down from the summit. We return to Chamonix later the same day.
 
Point 1 : Village of Pont 1960 m (6 468ft)- Victor Emanuel hut 2 732m (9 015ft)
We follow the GR (marked and maintained alpine hiking network) and hike up to the hut. No difficulty.
Vertical drop: 770m (2 526ft).
 
Point 2 : Victor Emmanuel hut 2 732m (9 015ft) - Montcorvé glacier 3050m (1006ft)
Trail section.
Vertical drop: 1090m (3576ft).
 
Point 3 : Montcorvé glacier 3050m (1006ft) - Bottom of the summit 4000 m (13123ft)
Mountaineering. Glacier section.
Vertical drop: 2040 m (6692ft).
 
Point 4 : Bottom of the summit 4000 m (13123ft) - Summit of Gran Paradiso 4061 m (13 400ft)
The route follows a regular 40° slope and is entirely on glacier.  An airy ridge leads to the summit.
Vertical drop: 2100 m (6890ft).

This program will depend on weather and terrain conditions at time of ascent, as well as group’s mountaineering skills and fitness level. The guide will suggest another ascent if necessary.

It allows you to be alone or in your own group with your mountain leader who will meet your specific needs. Meeting point : It will be fixed by your guide, depending on conditions.

Ability level : For people in excellent physical shape. Departure from the parking area in the village of Pont to the summit entails a 2161 m (7 131 ft) vertical gain.  It is a good speed climbing start. Yet it requires regular training in order to make it a successful adventure.

Hiking experience on glacier with crampons is necessary
People who wish to climb Gran Paradiso should have a good experience of the use of crampons on a glacier at high altitude.

 
Climbing times:  4 to 6 hours up and 3 to 4 hours down.
The descent follows mainly the same route.

 

Guiding policy : 1 to 4 people*. The Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix's guiding policy is one of the strictest in the mountain guiding business. It guarantees the most balanced groups as possible as well as high-quality personalised advice.

Food / provisions : Your responsibility. During the ascent breakfast and lunch can be taken at the hut Vittorio Emmanuel (2735m/ 9 025 ft). Participants must bring energy snacks (dry fruits, energy gel, chocolate…). Water at the huts is drinkable but not controlled. Bring small change in euros for extra drinks.

Equipment

We recommend you take particular care over you choice of equipment, as it plays a large role in the success of your trip. Weight is critical, and you must always evaluate the weight-to-comfort ratio to find the best compromise. Generally speaking, it is better to put on several thin layers than to have one bulky item of warm clothing, and it is vital that you remain dry at all times.
