General information
Aiguille de l’M - A great Chamonix classic

At the far end of the Aiguilles de Chamonix, above Montenvers, the Aiguille de l’M (2,844 m) stands out with its distinctive shape, clearly visible from the valley. This summit is an ideal objective for a first granite climb in the Mont Blanc massif, in a day.
The approach and the descent follow steep terrain in places and requires good fitness as well as confidence moving off trail. The Aiguille de l’M is an ideal objective for climbers with solid multi-pitch experience looking to take their first steps into alpine rock climbing.

The north-north-east ridge: a popular route

The north-north-east ridge is the most popular route on the Aiguille de l’M. This 200-metre climb (max 5b) offers a wide variety of climbing styles, with cracks, slabs, walls, chimneys and dihedrals following one another in a particularly aesthetic progression.
The dihedral in the lower third of the route is a memorable passage that has challenged generations of climbers. The NNE ridge offers a natural transition from multi-pitch climbing to alpine rock climbing, with more varied and committing terrain.

An ideal sector to progress

The Aiguille de l’M lies in a particularly interesting area for climbing and introductory alpinism. On its west face, the Ménégaux route (250 m, max 5c) offers sustained climbing, mainly in dihedrals, on high-quality granite. Nearby, the Frête des Charmoz is an excellent introductory alpine route, with enjoyable climbing along an accessible ridge. The whole sector offers a progressive way to discover high-mountain climbing in an exceptional setting above the Mer de Glace.
